From our ZCU team: "September puts a sudden huge load on UBC's wireless networks, and for a few weeks (including right now) there can be some instability. It seems a hard problem to avoid, with many people, each with many devices. It is worth setting up to be able to use our wired ethernet LANs, for the extra speed and stability. ZCU staff can arrange you an ethernet cable, but we are out of loaner adapters (if you need one to connect to your computer).
September is also peak season for phishing, because the black hats expect that a lot of people will be going online who are not yet familiar with the local ways of doing things, and a lot of people are in a hurry and not paying enough attention. Here is a quickie info video done by central IT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhO26-CljQg
The attacks can be nasty. If you get hit with something, including embarassing situations, just ask the ZCU for help. Confidential stuff stays that way, and we'll help you sort out the computing part.
Compromised Zoology accounts are an attack point for our systems, and when an account starts spamming it hurts the reputation of our mail server, making others less keen to accept messages from us. Please stay alert, and use a good password."
