The Zoology Computing Unit builds and maintains the computing infrastructure needed for the research, teaching and administration functions of the department. Services we offer include: email, printing (including posters), file serving, cloud storage, personal computer backups, flexible web hosting, shared equipment/software, consulting/advice, a computer cluster for large RAM-requiring jobs (usually genomics) and a server farm for simulations. "Gradlab" is our shared-equipment room, "Statslab" is a 20-seat PC lab for teaching, and a cart with 20 laptops which can be deployed in any classroom. The ZCU has a properly climate- and power-conditioned room both for shared departmental servers, and for computing equipment belonging to individual labs. We also have a computing tools loaner pool.
The ZCU offers the benefits of an embedded IT service. A few of these benefits are: the staff and the people they serve know each other, the staff and facilities are local and thus easy to contact/use, and our relatively smaller user base allows us to more easily specialize, adapt and innovate. The manager is a biologist, to facilitate communication to/from the computing world.
