Supervisory Committee & Committee Meetings
Supervisory Committee Requirements
Committee Meetings: all Zoology graduate students are expected to have annual committee meetings. A supervisory Committee Meeting form must be submitted to the zool.gradprgm@ubc.ca after each meeting.
Leave Requests
Leave of Absence Requests: Students who find it necessary to interrupt their graduate studies may request a leave of absence. A leave of absence must be requested before the date on which the leave will start. Retroactive leaves will only be approved in highly exceptional cases
Maternity and Paternity Leave: graduate students funded through NSERC grants may be entitled to a year of maternity/paternity leave. The supplement will be paid to students and fellows as per their current agency-funded salary/stipend for up to one year. If both parents are supported by grant funds, each parent may take a portion of the leave for a combined maximum of one year. The supplement will be pro-rated if the student or postdoctoral fellow is being trained in research on a part-time basis.
Information pertaining to the documents to be submitted can be found on this NSERC link (Grant Amendment Form).
Program Extensions
Program Extension Requests: there is a five-year time limit for the completion of a Master’s program and a six year time limit for the completion of a Doctoral program. If an extension is needed, the research supervisor must make a request to the department Graduate Advisor. The request must explain the reasons for the extension and include a detailed timeline for completion. Extension requests will not be approved without a committee meeting in the prior 12 months and the timeline for completion must be approved by the supervisory committee. Extensions will not be granted beyond two years.
