"The 2024 Molecular Ecology Prize goes to Michael Whitlock, for foundational contributions to the study of population genetics in space"
Molecular Ecology May 1, 2024: "Dr. Whitlock is a world authority on the role of spatial population structure in evolution. He has derived several population genetic results for spatially structured populations, which added a ubiquitous, but mainly ignored aspect of real biology to population genetics.
He also established the influence of non-equilibrium processes in genetic spatial structure, demonstrated important limitations of widely used models for statistical genetics inference, and identified sources of bias in methods for detecting adaptive loci.
Additionally, he has also contributed to the field through exceptional service, include writing leading texts on statistical methods, serving as President of the American Society of Naturalist and The American Naturalist, and establishing a data archiving policy at major publications in the field, including us at Moleculer Ecology.
Dr. Whitlock joins a prestigious list of previous Molecular Ecology Prize winners and we thank him for his many contributions to the field. Congrats again, Prof. Whitlock!"
