It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Don McPhail. Don passed away at home with his family.
Don was a dedicated member of faculty in the Department of Zoology between 1966 and his retirement in 1999 (he was previously at the University of Washington). His research focussed on speciation, evolution, ecology & biogeography of freshwater fishes. Over the course of his research career, Don received numerous awards including a Fellowship from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama, a Killam Senior Fellowship, and the Murray A. Newman Award from the Vancouver Aquarium. Don authored nearly 100 highly cited journal articles and published the acclaimed books: Freshwater Fishes of Northwestern Canada and Alaska in 1970 (with C.C. Lindsey also a past Zoology professor at UBC) and The Freshwater Fishes of British Columbia in 2007.
