Email

There are two primary mail services for general campus use:

1. student.ubc.ca (student email, addresses end in @student.ubc.ca) and
2. outlook.office.com (for Faculty and Staff, addresses are cwlusername@mail.ubc.ca or end in @zoology.ubc.ca or firstname.lastname@ubc.ca). 

For various aspects of UBC business, you’re required to have a UBC email address, whether it’s an cwlusername@student.ubc.ca, cwlusername@mail.ubc.ca, firstname.lastname@ubc.ca, or name@zoology.ubc.ca address. Some specific services depend on a particular mail account, so you may only end up needing one of these mail accounts, or you may end up needing both.

UBC's Student Email Service

  • @student.ubc.ca email address
  • every student is entitled to an cwlusername@student.ubc.ca account
  • students retain these accounts for life
  • does not support email aliases (eg: name@zoology.ubc.ca)
  • required for student access to Office 365, OneDrive and Teams
  • accessed at outlook.office.com
    • log in using <cwlusername>@student.ubc.ca as user name, and CWL password

Outlook Exchange Email Service

  • Access Outlook at: Outlook Web
  • log in with firstname.lastname@ubc.ca address
  • only available to active university employees and graduate students
    • graduating students can retain their mailbox for a grace period of one year (please contact zoology.hr@ubc.ca or zoology.support@ubc.ca before you leave UBC)
  • supports alias @zoology.ubc.ca
  • require firstname.lastname@ubc.ca for access to Microsoft365 (OneDrive/Teams)
  • suited to the use of shared mailboxes and calendars
    • accounts/mailboxes are removed after an employee leaves or a student graduates
  • request a UBC email account from zoology.support@ubc.ca
    • Please provide your CWL ID and your role at the Department of Zoology, and your preferred email address (eg: name@zoology.ubc.ca)

Set up autoreplies or vacation messages by going to the following:

  1. Log into outlook.office.com
  2. Click on the gear icon (at the upper right)
  3. Click on Account --> Automatic replies
