Electives Definitions

Electives are of several types and are a common source of confusion to students:

Program Electives

Program electives are required in almost all program options and must be chosen from a list of courses specified for each program option, which are located on the back of the program worksheets. Three credits of Directed Studies (BIOL 448) may be counted as a program elective in Majors programs other than General Biology. Additional Directed Studies courses are allowed as General Electives.

Note: The 12 credits of upper level Biology courses required for the Biology Major MUST BE BIOL COURSES (NOT MICB, ANAT, PHYL, etc).

Program Electives Lists

General Electives (or just Electives)

Up to 12 credits of electives in Majors and Honours programs may be from any faculty any level.

Arts Electives

Twelve credits must be selected from the offerings of the Faculty of Arts (in addition to 6 credits of first-year English). Note: courses must be chosen from those that the Faculty of Arts allows for credit toward the B.A. Not all Geography and Psychology courses have Arts credit, but all courses in Family Science (FMSC) do.

Breadth Electives.

In all Majors programs, 9 credits must be Arts or Science courses outside of the field of the Major (broadly construed). For Biology Majors these courses may be anything in Arts or Science other than Life Sciences courses. See Majors Program worksheets for details. Any Arts courses taken to fulfill this requirement are in addition to the Arts electives requirement listed above. This requirement does not apply to Honours programs.

Some elective courses may not be available in the current year. Please check the UBC Registration Web site for course availability (https://courses.students.ubc.ca/cs/main).
