Adelgidae


Adelgids; conifer woolly aphids. This is a small group with only 50 species world-wide. All species feed on conifers, particularly the foliage or twigs. Many species exhibit complex heteroecious (host-alternating) life cycles, forming shoot galls on the primary host, spruce, and alternating to some other conifer. Several species are important forest pests.

Antenna of aptera with 3-4 articles, of alata with 5 articles; each flagellar article of alata with a single large rhinarium; preapical setae of distitarsi acuminate; pretarsal setae acuminate to weakly capitate; wax glands aggregated into facetted plates; female with well developed sclerotic ovipositor.
