NERVOUS TISSUE
- This is a LONGITUDINAL SECTION THROUGH A NERVE because one can see
a multitude of tube-like structures (A) surrounded by white cocoons (B).
The tube-like structures (A) are the longest ramifications of the neurons (the axons) that
transmit nerve impulses from one part of the body to another.
The light cocoons around the axons (B) are made by a specific type of glial cells
that wrap themselves around the axons. The cells bodies of these neurons are not found in the
nerve: they are located in the ganglia of the Peripheral Nervous System
or in the Central Nervous System.
