SPONGY BONE:
  • In contrast to compact bone tissue, spongy (cancellous) bone consists of an irregular latticework of thin blades of bone called trabeculae.
  • The space between the trabeculae are filled with red marrow which produces blood cells.
  • Spongy bone makes up most of the bone tissue of short, flat and irregularly shaped bones and most of the heads (epiphyses) of long bones.
