FIBROCARTILAGE:
  • The chondrocytes lie within chambers in the matrix called lacunae. Fibrocartilage is quite similar to hyaline cartilage but its matrix contains many coarse collagen fibers running parallel to each other.
  • Because of the presence of these extra collagen fibers, not only can fibrocartilage resist compression but it can also resist pulling.
  • It will be found where strong support and the ability to withstand heavy pressure is required, such as the pubic symphysis (point where hipbones join anteriorly), intervertebral discs (discs between vertebrae) and the menisci of knees (disc of knee joint).
