THE THORAX - sternum

The sternum or breast bone is divided into 3 portions:

The articular surface (= clavicular notch) for the clavicle (collar bone) is located laterally on its superior edge.

The first 7 ribs articulate with the sternum through costal cartilages.

Palpate the superior border of the sternum, the sternoclavicular joint, and the xiphoid process on your own body. These serve as landmarks for the location of vital organs within the thoracic cage.
