Proclaiming Ownership of the Hazelnut Bush

Acrylic on canvas

Harold Eyster

One of the biggest ways that humans interact with, bolster, and destroy nature is through agriculture. Some of my research explores new ways of doing agriculture that benefits humans and birds. This image shows one such new way: a dickcissel claiming territory over a hazelnut bush growing in a perennial polyculture farm that has replaced a corn monoculture field in the American Midwest.

Harold Eyster’s PhD research interrogates human–nature relationships to address environmental challenges. He uses his paintings to represent some of these salient relationships.
