Join us for a discussion centred around the McLaughlin et al. (2023) paper titled “Multivariate Models of Animal Sex: Breaking Binaries Leads to a Better Understanding of Ecology and Evolution” (accessible through UBC Library HERE).

While we are progressing in our understanding that gender has immense variation, sex is often still treated (and taught!) as a binary. Yet there is a large and growing literature on the complexity of sex at multiple levels of biological organization. This paper discusses our current knowledge and recommendations for biologists for thinking about and measuring sexual diversity. Please note this paper contains some offensive and transphobic language as part of a literature survey on changing language use in the biological sciences.
