Upcoming Event: An Introduction to DBER and SoTL in Undergraduate Science Education
This summer Skylight will be offering a “Doing SOTL/DBER in Science” series that will engage Science faculty, staff, and students in conversations about research approaches and projects in undergraduate STEM education. See below for information about the first session taking place in May and feel free to share with others you think would be interested in attending.
Session Title: An Introduction to DBER and SoTL in Undergraduate Science Education
Date: Tuesday, May 26th, 2026
Time: 10:00am-11:30am
Location: MSL 101 (Michael Smith Laboratories)
Facilitators: Ashley Welsh (Faculty Liaison, CTLT & Skylight) and Christine Goedhart (SES in Botany, Skylight)
Description: In this session, we will review the frameworks and approaches for research in undergraduate science education through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER). We will engage in conversations to better understand the uniqueness and overlaps between these two fields, review examples of how SoTL/DBER is conducted in Science, and consider research questions within our own contexts.
