This week's discussion is based off of an article from the Associated Press describing this year as a "mast year", a cyclical year where trees like oaks and walnuts synchronously produce large amounts of fruit. There still remains a healthy debate over the mechanisms and drivers of these masting cycles, as a predator satiation strategy, or as a response to favorable climatic conditions. To prepare for our discussion, let's read this paper by Hacket-Pain and Bogdziewicz on climate change and trends in masting, as well as this "History of Masting Research" by Koenig.
